The Shire of Broome is seeking community feedback on a new draft Commemorative Memorial Plaque Policy.
The draft Policy has been developed to provide a clear, consistent and transparent approach to the assessment, approval, installation and management of commemorative memorial plaques in Shire-managed public spaces.
It follows previous community requests for memorial plaques and aims to ensure future applications are considered fairly and consistently, while protecting the amenity of Broome’s public spaces.
Under the draft Policy, nominees must demonstrate a significant connection to the Shire of Broome and have made significant contributions to the community.
The draft Policy also proposes:
- two approved locations for plaques – the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore lookout wall and Kimberley sandstone seating at Guwarri Town Beach
- standard plaque specifications, including size and materials
- a minimum 12-month period following the death of an individual before an application can be made
- criteria for considering requests for plaques in alternative locations
- a 10-year life period for approved plaques, during which the Shire will undertake maintenance
- applicants being responsible for the manufacture and installation costs of approved plaques.
Existing memorial plaques at Guwarri Town Beach will remain in place. Plaques temporarily removed as part of the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment will also be reinstalled and will not be subject to assessment under the proposed Policy.
Council endorsed the draft Policy for public comment at its Ordinary Meeting on 27 August 2026.
