The Broome Public Library will host a special event tomorrow as the much-loved community facility celebrates its 40th year anniversary.

Based on Hamersley Street and operated by the Shire of Broome, the library is a hub for literacy and lifelong learning, community events and digital connection.

The library was opened on November 18, 1981 and this week marks four decades of providing an invaluable service for the Broome community.

The Shire undertook a Community Perceptions Survey in 2020, with respondents giving the library a 96% positive rating – the highest result of every metric surveyed.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the library had been an important community facility for a long time.

“The Broome Public Library is a thriving centre of education, connectivity and community spirit, with Wednesday’s event a celebration of 40 years of selfless service,” he said.

“The Minister for Arts and Culture David Templeman visited the library recently and was full of praise for the facility and our wonderful staff.

“To give you an idea of the level of patronage, there were 48,196 library loans in the 2020-21 Financial Year – that’s over 900 per week.

“With all the regular children’s events and plethora of resources available at the library, it is a hub of activity.

“Our community loves the library – I’d welcome everyone to join the fantastic team on Wednesday to celebrate this landmark day with a fun afternoon of library-themed bingo and cake!”

The event begins at 3pm on Wednesday, November 17.
