A new skatepark in Broome is one step closer after a contractor to construct the youth facility was selected by Shire Councillors.

The provision of additional youth services was identified in the Shire’s 2020 Community Perception Survey as a priority, with the new skatepark set to be a major asset for Broome’s young people.

The $1.5 million project is being co-funded by the Shire and Lotterywest, with Premier Mark McGowan travelling to Broome in late August to announce and confirm $1 million of funding had been secured following a successful LotteryWest grant application by the Shire.

The remaining $500,000 will be contributed by the Shire, with the existing facility on Cable Beach Road East to be demolished and a new ’regional-level’ skatepark to be constructed on the same site.

At Thursday night’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, award-winning skatepark specialists CONVIC were selected as the preferred contractor to undertake the work

Shire of Broome chief executive officer Sam Mastrolembo said the new skatepark was one of many investments in local sporting infrastructure over the last few years.

“The new skatepark has been planned in collaboration with the Broome community and invaluable feedback from our young people has been incorporated into the final design,” he said.

“The Shire received over 200 public submissions during our consultation process, with about 50 per cent coming from people aged 22 or younger.

“We know that participation in sport is increasing in Broome and that providing top-class facilities is a key part of our town’s continued growth.

“I’m sure the new skatepark will be loved by Broome’s youth and I’d like to thank Lotterywest once more for their support to make the project a reality.”
