The Shire of Broome proudly partnered with local organisations to host a vibrant celebration of this year’s International Day of People with Disability on December 3 at the Goolarri Gimme Club, marking a day of creativity, connection, and community collaboration.

The highlight of the event was a screening of the short film series Keeping Strong, produced by Paul Bell for Shinju Matsuri. The series showcased powerful stories of local individuals living with disability, offering an inspiring glimpse into resilience and community spirit.

The event showcased exceptional community collaboration, with multiple local organisations coming together to create an inclusive and engaging experience. Attendees explored a variety of interactive activities, including an art workshop hosted by Brenton McKenna and activity tables presented by Broome Circle, Boab Health, and Kimberley Care Group.

Broome Public Library representatives engaged attendees with a variety of activities while highlighting the diverse services and programs offered at the Shire facility to support people with a disability in the community.

KAMS also facilitated transport from surrounding communities, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to participate and making the event accessible to all.

Shire President Chris Mitchell described the event as a shining example of Broome’s community spirit in action.

"It was incredible to see our community come together in such a meaningful way. This event truly reflects our vision of a ‘Future for Everyone’ — a community where accessibility, inclusion, and opportunity are celebrated every day."

"From the inspiring film to the hands-on activities, today reminded us that when our community works together, we create a place where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive."

The event was a resounding success, not only celebrating the talents and stories of people with disability, but also furthering the Shire’s ongoing commitment to building a more accessible and inclusive Broome.

The Shire of Broome would like to thank all partner organisations, volunteers, and community members who made the day possible, highlighting that inclusion and accessibility remain central to the Shire’s mission.

The event was made possible through funding support from Developmental Disability WA.
