The Shire of Broome is proud to announce the adoption of its new Weed Management Strategy and Action Plan 2026-2029 after the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 20 November.  This marks a significant step forward in protecting the townsite's environment, biodiversity, and community spaces.

The plan is the result of community consultation, incorporating feedback from the community, relevant stakeholders, and local groups to ensure it addresses the issues that matter most.

The strategy focuses on four key priority areas to maximise impact. It aims to protect Minyirr Park by addressing weeds entering the reserve through drainage systems; protect native vegetation from invasive species; continue re-treatment efforts in priority locations; and support community-led initiatives by coordinating efforts to encourage local participation.

The vision of the plan is to provide a strategic framework for managing weeds within the Shire of Broome and to guide prioritised actions that deliver tangible outcomes.

Its goals are to prevent new weed problems from establishing, to understand the occurrence and extent of priority weed species and their impact across the townsite, and to limit the effects of weeds on biodiversity.

Shire President Chris Mitchell thanked the community for their input, noting that the collaborative approach ensured the plan reflects both scientific knowledge and local experience.

“Community involvement was vital to shaping this plan. By listening to local residents and stakeholder groups, we can focus our efforts where they are most needed and work together to protect Broome’s unique environment.”

“This plan is a great example of what can be achieved when the community and the Shire work hand in hand - from protecting our natural areas to empowering residents to take action in their own neighbourhoods.”

The Shire looks forward to implementing the Weed Management Plan and continuing to support community participation in keeping Broome resilient.
