The Shire of Broome is proud to highlight a shining example of community spirit and environmental consciousness through the efforts of local residents.

As avid gardeners and passionate community members, these groups have been dedicating time to removing invasive plants and establishing native species in public open spaces, helping protect Broome’s natural environment.

Recognising the group's commitment, the Shire of Broome has formalised support for their work. The regular community gardening activities are now registered with the Shire, resulting in the Parks and Gardens team coordinating their schedules so as not to interfere with the efforts.

The team also provides practical support, including free green waste collection and disposal, access to gardening tools, and guidance on best practices, such as plant identification, safety measures, and sustainable techniques.

The groups say they has gained valuable knowledge through the experience and are pleased to have their efforts formally recognised.

This is part of a broader initiative, with similar arrangements currently in place with a number of dedicated community members across Broome townsite. These partnerships demonstrate how collaboration between residents and the Shire can enhance public spaces, preserve the environment, and strengthen community connections.

Shire President Chris Mitchell says this demonstrates the positive outcomes we can achieve when working together.

"Initiatives like this highlight the impact that partnerships with residents can have. By supporting community-led efforts, we can collectively enhance our public spaces and ensure the health of our environment for future generations."

"Community involvement is central to the success of our environmental programs. These collaborations show that when we work together, we can achieve far more than a single organisation could on its own."

Shire President Chris Mitchell encourages anyone interested in contributing to their local area through gardening or environmental maintenance to get in touch.

“If you’re already involved or want to get started, we’d be delighted to support you.”
