Broome’s outstanding community members were recognised at the Community Citizen of the Year Awards, held as part of the Shire of Broome’s Australia Day celebrations at Broome Civic Centre on January 26.
The awards, delivered in partnership with Auspire – Australia Day Council WA, honour individuals and groups who have made a meaningful contribution to the Broome community through volunteering, leadership, service and community connection.
This year’s recipients are:
- Citizen of the Year: Darren ‘DJ’ Muir
- Youth Citizen of the Year: Jaquarn Shoveller
- Senior Citizen of the Year: Wendy Knox
- Active Citizenship (Group or Event): Broome Basketball Association
The Shire of Broome received a strong field of nominations across all categories, reflecting the depth of community spirit and generosity that exists throughout Broome. Contributions recognised ranged across volunteering, sport and recreation, arts and culture, environmental initiatives, advocacy, education, health and social inclusion.
Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell said the awards provided an important opportunity to publicly acknowledge those who give their time and energy to strengthen the community.
“The Community Citizen of the Year Awards give us a chance to shine a light on the people and groups who quietly go above and beyond for others, often without expecting recognition,” he said.
“Whether through volunteering, leadership, advocacy or bringing people together, each of this year’s recipients has made a meaningful contribution to Broome.”
“Their generosity, commitment and passion help make Broome a more connected, inclusive and vibrant place to live, and the Shire is proud to recognise and thank them for the difference they make.”
Throughout the presentation of the awards, each recipient was recognised for their unique contribution to the Broome community.
Community Citizen of the Year Darren ‘DJ’ Muir was recognised for his work supporting young people to reconnect with education, culture and themselves through two-way learning, sport and personalised programs.
Youth Citizen of the Year Jaquarn Shoveller was recognised for his dedication to basketball and the positive influence he has on young people across Broome and the region through his leadership and sporting achievements.
Senior Citizen of the Year Wendy Knox was acknowledged for her long-standing volunteer service with the State Emergency Service and the wider Broome community, providing calm leadership and reliable support behind the scenes.
The Active Citizenship Award was presented to Broome Basketball Association in recognition of its volunteers’ commitment to creating inclusive opportunities that build skills, confidence and community connection through basketball.
All nominees were acknowledged during the ceremony on Monday morning, with the Shire extending its thanks to each individual and group for their service to the community.
