Cable Beach project wins PIA Award for stakeholder engagement
Published on 09 November 2024
The Shire of Broome is proud to announce that the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment project has won the prestigious Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) 2024 Awards for Planning Excellence Western Australia in the category of Stakeholder Engagement.
This award celebrates the project’s approach to bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring meaningful consultation and collaboration at every stage.
The Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment project, which aims to transform one of Western Australia’s most iconic locations into a world-class foreshore precinct, has successfully incorporated feedback from Nyamba Buru Yawuru, local residents, businesses, and government agencies.
This inclusive and transparent consultation process has been central to ensuring the project meets the community’s needs while respecting its cultural and environmental significance.
The community consultation process began nearly a decade ago with the 2016 Cable Beach Development Strategy, which outlined the community’s vision for the site.
This vision was further developed through the 2017 Masterplan, and a detailed Business Case in 2020 that provided the financial framework for the project. In 2022, the project’s design was finalised, and Stage 1 construction commenced in late 2023.
A key element of the consultation process has been the establishment of the Community Stakeholder Reference Group, which has been pivotal in providing valuable feedback and serving as a conduit between the project team and the broader community.
This collaborative effort has resulted in a well-balanced plan that not only addresses technical and environmental requirements but also respects the cultural and social significance of the area.
Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell stated, “This recognition is a testament to the thoughtful approach we’ve taken to ensure that the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment truly reflects the needs and aspirations of our community.
Our engagement with stakeholders has been central to the project’s success, and we’re proud to see it acknowledged on a state level.”
The award highlights the Shire’s commitment to best-practice planning and community engagement and the creation of a sustainable future for Walmanyjun Cable Beach.
