And that’s a wrap…what a year 2021 has been!

It has been great to see lots of community events occurring in the lead up to Christmas and the end of the year. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Broome community a safe and merry Christmas.

2021 has been a year of accomplishments for the Shire of Broome and our community.

In the 2020 Community Perceptions Survey, the community asked for us to prioritise the Broome Boating Facility and the Shire secured $36.3 million towards the development this year. We continue to advocate to secure the remaining funding and make the project a reality.

Key precincts, Chinatown and Town Beach, have been completed in 2021. The Chinatown Revitalisation Project brought with it an array of beautiful public art pieces and the new jetty's completion was the final puzzle piece for the Town Beach Foreshore Redevelopment.

2022 brings exciting opportunities, with a priority being the redevelopment of our third key precinct - Cable Beach. We are currently in the detailed design phase of this project and the establishment of a Cable Beach Community and Stakeholder Reference Group is another milestone.

I acknowledge public safety is a community priority and we collectively still have room to grow in this space. That said, the creation of our Community Safety Working Group, the establishment of a Banned Drinkers Register and joint patrols with the Broome Police and Rangers is a step in the right direction.

Lobbying efforts by the Shire and Kimberley Regional Group to address juvenile justice issues in the Kimberley have been recognised, with the State Government pledging to invest $2.355 million into the Kimberley Juvenile Justice Strategy.

2022 promises to be another busy year and the Shire is committed to continuing to help Broome be an even better place to live, work and visit.

I hope 2022 is a healthy and prosperous year for the entire Broome community and we hope to continue to build a future for everyone.

Harold Tracey - Shire of Broome president
