The Shire of Broome is excited to announce a major step forward in supporting local artists and expanding exhibition opportunities with the arrival of new state-of-the-art art display panels and improved art lighting for the Broome Civic Centre.

The $130,000 investment has been made possible through a $69,788 grant with support from the WA Government, through the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost, Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund.

Shire President Chris Mitchell said the new infrastructure represents more than just an investment to the Civic Centre — it’s a commitment to the future of the arts in Broome.

“These new panels will allow us to showcase and celebrate the incredible creative talent we have in Broome and the Kimberley region,” Shire President Chris Mitchell said.

“We know that access to professional exhibition space has been a challenge, and this upgrade will open the door to so many new possibilities — not only for local artists but for national touring exhibitions that have previously bypassed our region.”

The addition of this new infrastructure creates exciting new opportunities for hosting touring exhibitions and gives local artists a professional space to showcase their work within the Broome Civic Centre.

With movable display panels now in place, the venue can be transformed into a flexible exhibition space capable of supporting a wide range of visual arts programming.

“This upgrade directly supports the goals of our Arts and Culture Strategy by attracting new cultural experiences to Broome and advocating for long-term investment in arts infrastructure,” Shire President Chris Mitchell said.

“Broome is already known for its creative spirit — this is about investing in our arts sector and giving them tools, platforms and spaces they deserve.”

The new panels have arrived just in time for one of Broome’s most anticipated events — the Shinju Matsuri Art Award Exhibition. Renowned for showcasing some of the region’s finest artistic talent, the exhibition will be the first to make use of the upgraded display system.

The Shire has proudly supported the event and awards for many years, with the winning pieces forming part of the Shire’s valued collection.

It’s a fitting debut for this new infrastructure, which elevates the presentation of artworks and enhances the viewing experience.

The Shire of Broome gratefully acknowledges the support from the WA Government, through the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost, Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund.
