The Shire of Broome Council has approved the extension of the trading licence for Beam Mobility Australia until December 2026 at the October 31 Ordinary Meeting of Council.

This decision has come after extensive community consultation on the trial period which has been running since May 2023.

The survey conducted had 705 responses, with 62% in support of Beam scooters continuing operation in Broome.

The survey responses expressed support citing convenience, affordability, accessibility, and environmental benefits as key reasons for wanting the provider to continue.

In addition to the survey, Shire officers consulted directly with key stakeholder groups, including WA Police, Main Roads WA, healthcare providers, and community service organisations.

Key concerns that arose from the consultation included obstruction of footpaths, helmet usage, and scooter speeds.

The Shire of Broome has provided conditions to Beam with the extension of the trading license to ensure community concerns voiced during the consultation process are heard.

Beam has committed to several measures to improve its operations including, enhanced parking management by using innovative technology, increased Beam staff presence, and an In-App rider check to deter drink-riding on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Shire President Chris Mitchell stated that this is a positive outcome for the community, with the Shire carefully considering all feedback to achieve beneficial results for everyone.

“We’ve listened to the community and taken all the feedback into account to ensure the best possible results for everyone involved.

“The Shire will continue to work closely with Beam to ensure the additional provisions are enforced.”
