Expanded Coastal access options in next phase of Cable Beach project
Published on 27 March 2025
The transformation of Walmanyjun Cable Beach into a world-class coastal destination is set to enter its next exciting chapter, with Stage 2 of Broome’s Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment project likely to commence in April 2025.
Recognising the importance of Walmanyjun Cable Beach vehicle access to both the local community and visitors, the Shire of Broome is committed to ensuring improvements that enhance this cherished tradition.
To safely and efficiently deliver this landmark project, vehicle access north of the rocks will be temporarily closed during construction. However, enhanced coastal vehicle access will be available at Gantheaume Point, doubling the stretch of beach. This alternative location, already accounting for approximately 60 per cent of all vehicle movements on Walmanyjun Cable Beach, reinforces its suitability as an interim access point.
Throughout construction, pedestrian access to the entire beach will be maintained, ensuring visitors can continue to enjoy the shoreline on foot. Stage 1 of the project is set for completion before the vehicle access ramp closure, delivering enhanced amenities, a revitalised beach experience, and a newly constructed stairway that will provide seamless access from the car park to the shore.
"We understand the deep connection our community and visitors have with driving on Cable Beach," said Chris Mitchell, Shire of Broome President. "While vehicle access will need to adapt during construction, we are doubling coastal access options at Gantheaume Point to ensure everyone can continue enjoying Broome's magnificent coastline."
Gantheaume Point offers breathtaking cliff-top coastal views, dramatic sunset vistas, and easy access to the renowned dinosaur footprints. This transition period not only allows for efficient construction but also highlights the diverse ways to experience Broome’s coastline.
The temporary vehicle access adjustments are based on public safety requirements and will ensure the redevelopment progresses efficiently while protecting the coastal environment. Incorporating additional vehicle access at Gantheaume Point will also help mitigate illegal beach access during this time, which poses risks to critical nature reserves.
Essential service vehicles, licensed businesses, and emergency vehicles will still be able to access Walmanyjun Cable Beach via the new vehicle ramp closer to the Broome Surf Club. To support activity at Gantheaume Point, the Shire will enhance Ranger presence during peak usage periods to ensure compliance and safety.
By completing this work in a focused timeframe, the Shire, in partnership with CMA Contracting, can minimise the overall impact while delivering improved facilities that will enhance beach access for everyone.
When construction is complete, the community will enjoy a transformed Walmanyjun Cable Beach with world-class facilities and reimagined coastal infrastructure, reinforcing Broome’s reputation as a premier coastal destination.
