The Shire of Broome has launched an online survey as part of the Community Review process for the new Regional Resource Recovery Park (RRRP) – an initiative to secure our town’s waste management needs long into the future.

A six-week Community Review process commenced on February 15, with the Broome community invited to review the work the Shire has undertaken to date and have an input on this critical infrastructure project.

The survey will gather community feedback on a number of components of the RRRP, including the investigations carried out to date and the site selection process.

Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said feedback from the survey would be shared after the engagement process to provide an update on findings to date.

“It’s essential that the Broome community has a voice and a valued contribution to this significant project,” she said.

“The survey is just one way we are engaging with the community to ensure they are part of this important decision, share their views and offer feedback.

“We want to ensure the direction we take with the RRRP is safe for the community and the environment and we therefore encourage as many residents as possible to take the time to complete the survey.

“The data we gather, as well as feedback from the upcoming community workshops and pop-up displays around town, will support the Council’s decision-making process on the RRRP.”

The short online survey is open until Saturday, March 27 and can be undertaken at www.rrrp.com.au.

In addition to the survey, the Shire is hosting two information sessions to give residents an opportunity to gain information and insight into the project's history and processes.

Bookings can be made at www.eventbrite.com.au/o/shire-of-broome-31766337633 for the following sessions:

  • Coconut Well Residents: 5pm tonight, Thursday 4 March, Shire function room
  • General Community: 3pm tomorrow, Friday 5 March, Shire function room

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The landfill at Broome’s existing Buckleys Road Waste Management Facility is fast approaching the end of its operational life. In preparation for that and in line with the community’s desire to see a stronger commitment to recycling and waste minimisation, a new RRRP is being planned to support the community for the next 70 years and beyond.

The RRRP will include a Community Recycling Centre (CRC), Class III Landfill site and supporting site infrastructure. The RRRP will be driven by best practice design and operation principles, capable of recycling different types of waste to reduce the amount and type of waste sent to landfill.

For the past decade, the Shire has been working to explore potential sites within a 60km radius of Broome. Since 2019, the investigation process has narrowed the options down to two preferred sites.

Both sites meet the ecological and geological requirements, are close enough to town and have the required road infrastructure. They were extensively investigated during 2020 to gauge their suitability for the landfill component of RRRP, the results of which are outlined in the full Site Comparison Report at www.rrrp.com.au.
