Published on 08 November 2024
The 2024 season at Cable Beach has come to a close last week, and with it, the beach lifeguard services run by West Coast Water Safety have completed another successful year of keeping visitors and locals safe.
With this year has showing a significant increase in beach visitors—168,358 this year, up from 142,232 in 2023 —the lifeguards worked to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for locals and tourists.
Rescue incidents decreased by 6 this year, with lifeguards handling 12 emergencies compared to 18 last year. This suggests improved safety conditions and greater public compliance with beach use guidelines.
Throughout the year, lifeguards also administered first aid to 87 minor and 20 major cases.
They treated 95 jellyfish stings, including two Irukandji stings. Their presence on the beach extended beyond the water, enforcing rules by removing 430 dogs and 554 cars from restricted areas, handling 32 law enforcement incidents, and even relocating 19 snakes from busy areas.
Kevin Emery, Chief Operating Officer of West Coast Water Safety, praised the team’s dedication and hard work throughout the season. "Our lifeguards have done an incredible job, not only responding to emergencies but proactively ensuring beachgoers stayed safe. The reduction in rescues compared to last year speaks volumes about their efforts."
As the 2024 season wraps up, the community is thankful for the work of the lifeguards, whose commitment has kept Cable Beach safe.
