Major Old Broome Road upgrade officially complete

A major upgrade to one of Broome’s busiest roads is now complete, delivering safer connections and smoother journeys for motorists, bike riders and pedestrians.
The Shire of Broome has completed the $3.9 million Old Broome Road upgrade between Sandpiper Avenue and Short Street, with all road, shared path and finishing works now finalised.
A key feature of the project is a new three-metre-wide shared path along the western side of Old Broome Road, jointly funded by the State Government and the Shire as part of the WA Bicycle Network (WABN) Grants Program. WABN grant funding has also been provided for construction of shared paths on Sandpiper Ave, Bagot St and Coughlan St, linking to the Old Broome Rd shared path and providing a safer and more accessible route for people walking and riding into town.
The new shared path reduces the number of road crossings required and provides greater separation between pedestrians, bike riders and vehicles, supported by a raised kerb and upgraded fencing over the main culvert.
The project has also delivered an additional lane at the Sandpiper Avenue roundabout to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion during busy periods.
Extensive pavement repairs and resurfacing have also been completed along Old Broome Road between Sandpiper Avenue and Short Street, improving the condition and longevity of this important transport route.
Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell said the completed project was a significant improvement for one of the main gateways into Broome.
“Old Broome Road is used every day by residents, businesses and visitors, so it’s fantastic to see these upgrades now complete and open for everyone to enjoy,” he said.
“The new shared path creates a much safer connection for people walking and riding, while the road and roundabout upgrades will help keep traffic moving more efficiently.
“We’d also like to thank the community, particularly nearby residents, businesses and regular road users, for their patience and understanding while these important works were carried out.
“This is a great example of investment in practical infrastructure that makes getting around Broome safer and easier for our community.”
Roadline Civil Contractors was engaged as the principal contractor to deliver the works, working with the Shire throughout construction to complete the significant upgrade.
The $3.9 million project was funded through the Main Roads WA Road Project Grant (more than $2 million), Australian Government Roads to Recovery Program (close to $900,000), Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure as part of the WABN Grants Program (almost $750,000) and Shire of Broome ($302,000).
