New paths, better connection – Shire of Broome awarded $2.6m in grants

The Shire of Broome is pleased to announce its successful bid for $2.6 million in funding through the Western Australian Bicycle Network (WABN) Grant Program.
This funding will support the design and construction of four key shared path projects, identified in the Broome Recreation Trails Masterplan throughout the next three years, significantly enhancing the Shire’s active transport infrastructure and improving connectivity for residents and visitors.
The Shire of Broome has previously benefited from the WABN program, receiving funding for the Conti Foreshore Shared Path project. This 1,039 metre path, which provides an all-access link between the Town Beach precinct and the Jetty to Jetty Trail towards Chinatown, was recognised as the regional winner at the 2022 Your Move Awards in the WABN category for its contribution to accessibility and public art integration.
The new projects funded by the WABN grant will include:
- Frederick St to Port Dr Shared Path - 925 metre shared path to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity on a key commuter route, linking the Broome Recreational and Aquatic Centre, the Broome Pump Track, Broome Boulevard Shopping Centre, St Mary's College, Broome Senior High School, and the new medical centre and childcare facility currently under construction.
- Old Broome Rd Shared Path - 1 kilometre shared path to provide a safer commuting route from the residential area of Roebuck Estate to Broome Senior High School and the Broome Townsite.
- Cable Beach Foreshore Access Path - 280 metre shared path connecting Millington Road to the foreshore amphitheatre at Cable Beach, improving accessibility to this popular coastal location.
- Demco Foreshore Path – 716 metre shared path extending from Town Beach, in front of the caravan park, to Demco Park to the west, consisting of 178m of boardwalk and 538m of path.
These projects have been jointly funded by the Shire of Broome and the State Government as part of the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program.
Construction of the Frederick St to Port Dr Shared Path connecting BRAC, the Boulevard Shopping Centre, and several schools will commence immediately alongside the Frederick Street roundabout works, providing a safe and accessible route for people walking, wheeling and riding to key areas of town.
Shire of Broome President, Chris Mitchell welcomed the funding announcement, highlighting the importance of these projects in promoting active transport and improving community connectivity.
“This funding is a fantastic win for Broome, helping us create safer, more accessible pathways for all. Whether it’s students heading to school, families visiting community spaces, or residents commuting, these projects will make it easier for everyone to get around town in a healthy and sustainable way,” he said.
“We are grateful for the continued support of the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program and look forward to delivering these vital infrastructure projects over the coming years.”
