Following a decision at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 1 May, the Shire of Broome advises the community that works will soon commence at the site of the Town Beach Café. The Shire has made the decision to demolish the existing structure, with works expected to commence this week.

The redevelopment of the café has been a long-held council and community aspiration for the precinct, with the intention of partnering with a commercial operator to design, build, and run a large-scale food and beverage establishment.

This continues to be a key strategic goal, and the Shire is actively working toward securing a future lease arrangement that supports this outcome. Originally, it was intended that these works would follow the successful negotiation of such a lease.

However, due to the deteriorating condition of the building and advice from a qualified building inspector confirming that it is no longer safe or suitable for public use, Council has made the decision to proceed with demolition now.

This approach reflects a necessary step to address safety concerns of the structure while also opening the door to reimagining the space to better meet the current and future needs of the community.

The Shire is focused on revitalising the site in the short to medium term through a variety of activation opportunities, alongside ongoing efforts to secure a long-term solution.

The area will remain accessible to local mobile food vendors, and the removal of the existing structure will create more space and flexibility to accommodate a greater number and variety of food trucks and pop-up vendors.

These arrangements aim to deliver community value, support local businesses, and enhance the vibrancy and appeal of the Town Beach precinct. “We recognise that this building holds memories and emotional significance for some members of our community,” said Shire President Chris Mitchell.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. Our focus now is to explore new opportunities that reflect community priorities and make the best possible use of this key location.”

The Shire is committed to ongoing communication with local residents and stakeholders as planning progresses for the future use of the site.

We thank the community for their understanding and continued interest in shaping the future of our public spaces.
