Nominations are open for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards

Nominations are now open for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards. These awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the positive impact of individuals, groups and events that make a positive contribution to the Broome community. Whether they are a nominee or recipient, we can all take pride in their contributions, because we are all part of the story.

Recognising local heroes for more than 20 years, the Awards include four categories:

• Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals over 16 years)
• Young Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 16-30 years)
• Senior Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 65 years and over)
• Active Citizenship (for community groups or community events)

Nominations can be made for contributions to education, health, fundraising, voluntary service, business, sport, arts, culture, the environment, social inclusion or any other area that enhances the wellbeing of our community.

Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell said there was no shortage of people making a positive difference in the community.

"From local sporting clubs and community groups to cultural events, environmental initiatives and volunteer organisations, Broome is full of people who generously give their time to strengthen our community." Cr Mitchell said.

"These awards provide an opportunity to reflect on those contributions, celebrate local achievements and recognise the individuals, groups and events that help make our community stronger.

“I encourage everyone to consider nominating someone who has made a positive difference over the past year."

Earlier this year, the Awards recognised Darren "DJ" Muir as Citizen of the Year, J’quarn Shoveller as Youth Citizen of the Year, Wendy Knox as Senior Citizen of the Year and the Broome Basketball Association as the recipient of the Active Citizenship Award.

Nominations for the 2027 Community Citizen of the Year Awards are now open and close on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
