OPINION: Advocating for Broome's Future

When people think about the work of the Shire of Broome, they understandably think about the services and infrastructure they see every day – our roads, parks, waste services, recreation facilities and community spaces.

But another important part of our role often happens behind the scenes: advocating for Broome.

Many of the major projects our community needs require significant investment, approvals or direct involvement from the State and Federal governments.

Our role is to make sure Broome’s priorities remain firmly on their agenda – and to be persistent.

The Broome Boating Facility is one example. While it is a State Government project, the Shire has long advocated for improved boating infrastructure that meets our community’s needs.

We are also progressing the proposed Broome Regional Resource Recovery Park to secure our long-term waste future and advocating for government investment in the redevelopment of the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre.

Housing remains another priority, with the Shire continuing to push for progress on McMahon Estate and broader action to increase housing and land supply.

Chief Executive Officer Sam Mastrolembo and I recently met with the Honourable John Carey BA MLA to discuss these priorities, along with rate exemptions and Financial Assistance Grants.

We have seen what persistent advocacy can achieve. In recent years, Broome has secured significant government investment towards Chinatown, Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore and improvements across BRAC, including the skatepark, Pump Track, lighting and covered outdoor courts. Securing additional police resources has also been an important win for our community.

Progress can take time, with months or years of planning, technical work and negotiations often happening behind the scenes.

As Shire President, I will continue working alongside Councillors and Shire administration to ensure Broome’s priorities are heard.

Broome deserves its fair share of investment – and we will keep making sure our voice is heard.
