The Shire advises the local community that Old Broome Road will soon undergo a series of significant upgrades designed to improve safety, accessibility and traffic flow for all road users.

Works are scheduled to commence in February, with construction expected to be completed by June.

The project area extends between the Old Broome Road and Sandpiper Avenue roundabout, through to the Bagot Street, Short Street and Hamersley Street roundabout.

From April, the road will be subject to intermittent full road closures, with partial closures also required as works progress. At times, traffic may be reduced to single-lane, one-way movement.

Comprehensive traffic management will be in place throughout the project, and road users are urged to follow signage, plan ahead where possible, and respect “local traffic only” instructions. Local traffic is restricted to vehicles needing access to properties or businesses within that immediate area and is not intended to be used as a through road or short cut.

Once complete, the upgrades will deliver lasting benefits for the community, including a new wide, shared path from Sandpiper Avenue to Short Street, creating a safer, more accessible route for walking and riding into town.

The new shared path is jointly funded by the State Government and the Shire of Broome as part of the Western Australia Bicycle Network (WABN) Grants Program.

A new slip lane at the Sandpiper Avenue and Old Broome Road roundabout will also improve traffic flow and help minimise congestion during peak periods.

The road and slip lane portion of the project are jointly funded by Main Roads WA Road Project Grant (RPG), Australian Government Roads to Recovery (RTR), and Shire of Broome.

In addition, the project includes standard road maintenance works, resurfacing and pothole repairs, ensuring this key local road is safer, smoother and better maintained into the future.

Shire President, Chris Mitchell, said the project represents an important investment in one of Broome’s key local roads.

“Old Broome Road is a vital connection for residents, commuters and visitors, and these upgrades will deliver real, long-term benefits for our community,”

“By improving safety for people walking and riding, easing congestion at the roundabout and upgrading the road surface itself, we’re delivering a road that better reflects how the community uses it today and into the future.”

The Shire thanks residents and road users for their patience during construction and looks forward to delivering these improvements for the community.
