Public health advice – Mosquito activity

With all the standing water around Broome, we anticipate there will be increased mosquito activity - possibly from as early as this weekend.

The Shire's Environmental Health Officers are out and about town identifying potential breeding sites and treating with larvicides.

This is an effective way of reducing mosquito numbers before they become a pest and more environmentally friendly than pest control options for adult mosquitos.

There’s also actions you can take to help reduce the impact of mosquitos.

Please use this weekend to:

• Remove any standing water around your property. Mosquitos only need a small amount of water to breed. This can include anything such as pot plants, discarded tyres, blocked drains, palm fronds or dogs water bowls.
• Stock up on DEET or picaridin based repellents. Citronella and other natural based repellents have very limited effect, and there is no evidence they provide any protection from mosquito borne disease.
• Consider applying residual pesticide sprays around your property.
