Broome Youth Precinct project moves forward to next stage

The Shire of Broome has reached another major milestone in delivering the future Broome Youth Precinct, with remediation works at the BRAC1 site now complete.
The successful completion of the remediation phase paves the way for the next stage of the project, with construction of the precinct's mountain bike trail now underway.
The Shire is partnering with Skills Pathway to deliver the project, providing Civil Construction trainees with valuable hands-on experience alongside Skills Engineering, before the final stage of works is completed by the Shire's own team.
The project is expected to be completed in time for the Term 3 school holidays.
Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell said completing the remediation works was a significant achievement and an important step towards transforming the site into a vibrant recreational destination for young people and families.
"This is a major milestone for a project our community has been looking forward to for many years,” he said.
"The remediation works were an essential first step to ensure the site is safe and ready for future development.
“With that now complete, we're excited to move into the next phase and begin bringing the Youth Precinct to life."
The remediation was undertaken by a licensed contractor in accordance with strict Western Australian environmental and safety requirements, with oversight from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, the Department of Health and WorkSafe WA.
While additional asbestos contamination was uncovered during the remediation process, the associated costs were fully funded through additional revenue generated by commercial and gate transactions at the Shire's Waste Management Facility, with no municipal ratepayer funds allocated to the remediation works.
The project also uncovered an unexpected piece of Broome's history, with three relic aircraft engines and a trolley discovered during excavation. These items have since been donated to the Broome Historical Society, preserving them for the benefit of the community.
The Youth Precinct Master Plan was developed through extensive community consultation and identifies the site as a central hub for youth recreation adjacent to the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre (BRAC). The vision includes a range of facilities designed to encourage active lifestyles and create opportunities for people of all ages to connect.
The current stage focuses on constructing the mountain bike trail, which will connect with the existing pump track and provide riders with a purpose-built trail featuring flowing sections and technical skill elements. The trail was identified as one of the community's highest priorities during consultation and forms a key part of the precinct's staged delivery.
Future stages of the Youth Precinct include a scenic walking trail, informal jump area, street sports courts, children's bike safety track, picnic facilities, event space and improved connections throughout the precinct, creating an integrated recreation destination for the Broome community.
"The Youth Precinct has always been about creating a space where young people can be active, social and connected while providing another fantastic recreational asset for the whole community,” Cr Mitchell said.
"It's exciting to see this vision continuing to take shape, and we look forward to seeing the mountain bike trail completed and enjoyed by local families later this year."
