The Shire of Broome is proud to congratulate Deputy Shire President Desiree Male and Chief Executive Officer Sam Mastrolembo, who were both recognised with the Eminent Service Award at the 2025 WALGA Local Government Awards.

This prestigious honour is presented to individuals who have demonstrated significant and distinguished service to WALGA, the local government sector and their wider communities.

Cr Male has served on Council since 2009 and has been Deputy Shire President since 2017, including a number of stints as Acting Shire President over this time and also formally holding the position of Shire President in 2023.

She has championed numerous key projects through her advocacy and leadership—most notably the Chinatown Revitalisation, Guwarri Town Beach upgrades, Broome Youth Precinct and the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment.

Her role as Chair of the Cable Beach Community and Stakeholder Reference Group was instrumental in the project receiving a WA Planning Institute Award. And her strong advocacy was pivotal in securing $60 million in funding for the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment.

Mr Mastrolembo has led the Shire of Broome as CEO for the past seven years, overseeing major transformational projects, including the Chinatown Revitalisation and Guwarri Town Beach upgrades.

He was also recognised for his valued contribution to regional and national advocacy through his roles with the Kimberley Regional Group, Kimberley Zone, and Regional Capitals Alliance WA.

Shire President Chris Mitchell congratulated both recipients on their well-earned recognition.

“Sam and Desiree have made exceptional contributions to Broome and local government. Their leadership, dedication and deep care for our community have helped shape Broome into the thriving town it is today. These awards are a fitting tribute to their service and vision.”
