The Shire of Broome Council endorsed the 2020-21 Budget at Thursday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, with plenty of exciting projects for the community to look forward to over the next 12 months, despite a pragmatic approach being taken.

The yearly Budget dictates how Shire funds will be spent for the following 12 months, ensuring transparency and strategic direction.

The backdrop to the 2020-21 Budget’s compilation has been the ongoing financial hardship of many residents and businesses in our community – as such the Shire has exercised austerity in relation to future spend.

This will remove any additional financial burden on the Broome community.

However, despite having a smaller Budget in 2020-21, an exciting number of projects have been accounted for.

These include Stage Two of the Chinatown Revitalisation Project, the Town Beach Jetty, BRAC Youth Precinct, the Broome Golf Club upgrade and the reconstruction of McDaniel Road.

Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said the local government had expertly managed a balancing act of being frugal in relation to spend and ensuring community expectations are met.

“Some of the projects to be funded in the 2020-21 Budget will make a massive difference to Broome once completed,” she said.

“I applaud the Shire staff that have exercised effective financial management and cost-cutting measures to ensure we can continue to deliver without the community having to cover an additional outlay.

“I’m convinced our plan will contribute to Broome’s continued positive evolution and exciting future.”
