Shire of Broome Councillors adopted the 2021-22 Budget at Thursday night’s June Council Meeting, with several exciting projects committed to over the next 12 months.

The yearly Budget dictates how Shire funds will be spent over the following 12 months, ensuring transparency and strategic direction.

While exercising caution and austerity, the Shire has carefully selected priorities for the 2021-22 financial year, with the organisation’s Strategic Community Plan providing guidance.

Along with the services that Broome residents come to expect, a number of capital projects have been funded.

These include a $1.5 million commitment to funding for the Skate Park Redevelopment, $867,815 towards the detailed design phase of the Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment, $430,000 towards the detailed design of a Community Recycling Centre and $310,000 to implement the Cemetery Master Plan.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said Councillors had adopted a sensible Budget that would play an important role in the provision of essential services and upgrades over the next 12 months.

“The Shire does not spend ratepayer money lightly and as such every project proposed for funding in 2021-22 has been examined with a fine-tooth comb,” he said.

“Residents should know their rates are helping fund a number of essential projects and improvements, which will help improve Broome as a place to live, work and visit.

“A 1.83% increase in this year’s rates is modest compared to other local governments around Western Australia and we’ve tried to ensure our ratepayers are getting bang for their buck with this carefully crafted Budget.”
