The Shire of Broome is proud to announce Director Corporate Services James Watt has been recognised by the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) with a Merit Award, acknowledging his outstanding contribution to local government and more than two decades of dedicated service to the sector.

Mr Watt began his local government career in 2003 at the Shire of East Pilbara before relocating to Broome in 2005, where he commenced as Manager Information Services.

Since 2016, he has served as Director Corporate Services, leading key areas including finance, governance, information technology, customer service, risk management and community facilities.

Over his 20 years with the Shire of Broome, Mr Watt has played a pivotal role in modernising systems, strengthening governance, improving financial planning and delivering projects that have enhanced services for the Broome community.

His leadership has helped shape the organisation's strategic direction while maintaining a strong focus on value for ratepayers.

Shire President Chris Mitchell congratulated Mr Watt on the well-deserved recognition.

"James has made an extraordinary contribution to the Shire of Broome and the local government sector over many years," Cr Mitchell said.

"His knowledge, leadership and commitment to continuous improvement have helped strengthen our organisation and deliver lasting benefits for our community.

"Whether it's leading major strategic initiatives, supporting staff development, improving governance systems or advocating for regional local governments, James consistently goes above and beyond.

"This award is a fitting recognition of his professionalism, dedication and the significant impact he has had not only in Broome, but across the Kimberley and Western Australian local government sector."

In addition to his work at the Shire, Mr Watt has been an active contributor to the broader local government sector through his involvement with WALGA, the Kimberley Regional Group and Local Government Professionals WA, including serving as President of the Pilbara Kimberley Branch.

The WALGA Merit Award recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service, leadership and commitment to local government in Western Australia.

Mr Watt received the award at the WALGA Local Government Awards Gala Dinner held in Perth on Friday, 12 June.
