Shire of Broome and littering - FAQ
Published on 03 November 2020
Q. How often does the Shire of Broome collect rubbish from public places?
A. The Shire’s clean-up crew undertake daily collections of the bins at Male Oval, Chinatown, Kennedy Hill lookout, Town Beach, Cable Beach and from the wharf area. Other areas are collected once or twice a week depending on usage. Rubbish from bins at small parks is collected once a week, while other more-prominent areas are collected twice a week.
Q. Do the clean-up crew just empty bins?
A. Shire staff also clear litter from the ground at the afore-mentioned areas when completing their route and they collect rubbish from road verges. The clean-up crew walk through drainage corridors to collect litter, while the parks and gardens team clear palm fronds and vegetation from these areas. Mowing teams also pick up rubbish before undertaking their work at reserves.
Q. What is the street sweeper’s role in keeping Broome clean?
A. The sweeper is on a program and gets to every suburb fortnightly in an effort to clear broken glass. On average, every street gets swept twice a year but some prominent areas are swept more regularly.
Q. Are there dedicated offal waste bins in Broome?
A. Yes, these are located at the boat ramps and are emptied frequently by Shire staff.
Q. What happens if I put offal in a different bin around town?
A. The bin may only be collected weekly i.e. bus shelters, so this will create a smelly mess for other residents and for the clean-up crew.
Q. Does the Shire clean-up crew deal with illegal dumping and areas that are not Shire-owned land?
A. Shire staff only clean-up areas managed by the Shire of Broome, but joint action is taken with other agencies to address illegal dumping. Areas such as the Kennedy Hill mangroves and former housing area, Coastal Parks, Minyirr Park and bush areas near Demco Drive are not Shire land.
Q. Will the Shire of Broome collect bags of litter collected by members of the public?
A. Some selfless Broome residents regularly collect litter and leave the bags on the verge – the Shire is more than happy to collect these bags for disposal – please contact the clean-up crew on 9191 3456 to arrange pick up.
