The transformation of Walmanyjun Cable Beach into a world-class coastal destination is set to enter its next exciting chapter, with Stage 2 of the foreshore redevelopment project commencing in the upcoming months with the appointment of CMA Contracting Pty Ltd as contractors.
CMA Contracting Pty Ltd brings expertise to the project with its established experience, local subcontractor relationships, and knowledge of the site and Broome’s unique environmental conditions.
Broome’s premier attraction, the white sandy stretch of Cable Beach and its elevated foreshore area, holds a globally significant reputation and is a core reason why people visit the Kimberley region.
The Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment represents an important opportunity to expand Broome’s peak season by stimulating commercial and tourism activation and transforming our high-quality natural assets into a global drawcard. Shire President, Chris Mitchell, said the project will provide many benefits for both locals and visitors.
“We are pleased to announce the awarding of the tender for Stage 2 of the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment. The project represents a significant investment in Broome's future; highlighting our ongoing commitment to enhance natural beauty and to boost our local economy”, he said.
“Complementing the outstanding work already done in Stage 1 including safeguarding our coastal environment with comprehensive dune stabilisation and added erosion control measures, plus beach access ramps and stairs, the works for Stage 2 will further enhance the experience for everyone who visits our stunning Cable Beach. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have for our community."
A comprehensive planning process, which began with the Cable Beach Development Strategy in 2015 and the Foreshore Master Plan in 2017, has been informed by extensive engagement with the community, visitors, and businesses.
This has shaped the design and staging priorities outlined in the business case to secure funding support from all levels of government. This $42 million infrastructure project will unlock over $10 million in private sector investment and support hundreds of jobs during and after construction.
The Shire of Broome acknowledges the significant contributions from key funding partners that have made this project possible. Major support has been provided by the Australian Government's regional Precincts and Partnership Program ($26.3 million), administered by Main Roads WA; the WA State Government's Royalties for Regions program ($9 million), administered by Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD); Lotterywest's Community Grants Program ($5 million); the WA Department of Transport's Hotspot Coastal Adaptation and Protection programme ($1.66 million); and the WA Department of Communities and the Commonwealth Department of Social Services through their support via the Changing Places Programme ($310,000).
