The Shire of Broome would like to thank the State and Federal Governments for their continued investment in the region after last week’s completion of the Cape Leveque Road sealing project.

A $65 million project, co-funded by the WA Government and Commonwealth, the road sealing will provide reliable and safe access to one of our region’s most significant tourism destinations.

Shire president Harold Tracey, Councillor Phil Matsumoto and members of the executive team joined politicians, dignitaries, community members and local Traditional Owners at a ribbon-cutting event on Thursday morning.

Cr Tracey said improving the reliability and safety of travel for residents and visitors of the Dampier Peninsula was a priority for the Shire and the project was a major positive for the region.

“It is fantastic to see political collaboration on this project, which has so many positive impacts,” he said.

“The project has had significant Aboriginal engagement and provided employment and training opportunities for residents of the district.

“The sealing of the road provides a higher level of reliability and safety to access the area and will open up a world of economic independence opportunities for tourism providers, businesses and residents of the Dampier Peninsula.

“The Dampier Peninsula is the jewel in Broome’s crown, with some of the most-scenic locations in all of Australia for visitors to enjoy responsibly.

“The Shire has advocated for many years to secure Government funding for this project, in what is a great outcome for everyone involved.”
