The Shire of Broome is offering financial assistance to local tourism and event organisations, with grants of up to $50,000 now available.

The Economic, Events and Tourism Development Fund (EETDF) is open for applications, with projects scheduled to take from 1 July, 2021 until 30 June, 2022 under consideration.

Organisations within the district are invited to apply and there is a preference for projects with 50 per cent or more leveraged cash contributions.

Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said the EETDF was another way of supporting the local economy and helping Broome-based organisations.

“The Shire has been very mindful of the tough economic climate locally over the last 12-18 months as COVID-19 and associated travel restrictions have impacted our region,” she said.

“We are currently supporting local not-for-profit organisations, charities and sporting groups through our Annual Community Matched Funding initiative, but our fantastic tourism-focused sector is certainly also worthy of a helping hand.

“Tourism is vitally important to Broome and the wider West Kimberley region, with some world-class operators and local destinations. This supports jobs and diversification.

“However, with little potential for international travel in the short term and ongoing uncertainty over inter-state travel, the Shire is committed to helping economic, events and tourism development where we can.

“I’d encourage relevant organisations to consider the funding guidelines and submit an application if they have a suitable project or event in mind.”

The funding round will close at 4pm on Friday, April 23.
