The Shire of Broome is excited to announce the commencement of important site remediation works between the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre (BRAC) and the Boulevard Shopping Centre.
This critical work marks the next step in delivering a dynamic new youth precinct that will become a central recreational hub for young people and families in the community. The remediation process will commence shortly and is anticipated to take six weeks to complete.
This project was initiated following the identification of asbestos contamination during the early stages of site planning and development. It is being carried out by a licensed contractor with extensive experience in environmental site remediation, ensuring the highest standards of safety and environmental care.
The works are being conducted in full compliance with the environmental and safety regulations of Western Australia, under the oversight of the Department of Water, Environment and Regulation (DWER), the Department of Health (DoH), and WorkSafe WA. Continuous air monitoring will be in place throughout the duration of the works to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
Importantly, there will be no impact to neighbouring properties, including BRAC, or to members of the public during the remediation. “All works are being done with public safety and environmental integrity at the forefront,” said Shire President Chris Mitchell.
“We want to reassure the community that this process will not affect BRAC, nearby properties, or day-to-day activities in the surrounding area.” This remediation is a key enabler for the next stage of the youth precinct development.
The Shire’s vision for this space includes a mountain bike track with jumps and technical elements, as well as a scenic walking trail. These new features will connect seamlessly to the existing pump track and BRAC ovals, creating an integrated and engaging recreational area for the whole community. “This is a significant milestone for our community,” said Shire President Chris Mitchell.
“The youth precinct has been a long-term goal, and we’re now taking the first tangible steps to bring it to life.”
The Shire of Broome is committed to investing in spaces that promote active lifestyles, connection, and youth engagement. We look forward to updating the community as progress continues on this exciting project.
