The Shire of Broome’s May 2021 Ordinary Meeting of Council took place on Thursday night, with Councillors voting on a number of important items.

The recipients of the latest round of the Shire’s Annual Community Matched Funding Program were endorsed, with 16 community organisations set to share almost $115,000 worth of funding.

Recipients of our Economic, Events and Tourism Development Funding for 2021-22 were also endorsed, with six organisations funded a combined $50,000 to deliver events in Broome.

A Development Application was received from the Lions Eye Institute, with Council approving an extension of the new medical centre at 45 Frederick Street, subject to a number of conditions.

A Development Application was also received by Urbis, on behalf of Nyamba Buru Yawuru, for a proposed subdivision on Dickson Drive. This was not supported in its current format on planning grounds.

The Council adopted changes to its regulations around temporary caravan and camping facilities, the ability to camp for longer periods of time and endorsed a temporary trial of overnight camping in caravans or recreational vehicles in the Cable Beach Surf Club carpark.

A 2020 acquittal report from Shinju Matsuri was received, while a new Economic Development Strategy was endorsed.

The Council adopted new parking time restrictions for Chinatown (post-construction), following consultation with business owners and stakeholders, while Local Emergency Management Arrangements have been reviewed and updated. 

Finally, an updated policy for the temporary employment or appointment of a Chief Executive Officer was backed, while the monthly statement of financial activity report for April 2021 was endorsed.
