The Shire of Broome has received a $26.3 million Federal Government grant for Stage 2 of the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment (WCBFR).

The $26,361,852 comes from the Australian Government’s $400 million regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP), which funds the design and delivery of precincts, or ‘places with purpose’, to meet place-based community priorities.

Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell said this grant will go a long way to funding Stage 2 of the WCBFR, which is the major phase of the project.

“This is great news, and on behalf of the Shire, I would like to thank the Federal Government, and Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King for their generous support of this transformative project,” Shire President Mitchell said.

“This will allow us to begin transforming the area near the Cable Beach House restaurant into a key arrival point fitting of iconic Cable Beach, with a vibrant community plaza and a scenic lookout area over the dunes that will enhance the overall appeal of the precinct.

“It will also see the amphitheatre at the north of the precinct being significantly altered to point more southwards to accommodate large-scale events and provide a better line of sight to Cable Beach’s world-famous sunsets.

The completion of Stage 2 will make way for Stage 3, which will include interpretative signage and, most significantly, the construction of a climbing wall and themed water playground that will make the Cable Beach foreshore an attractive place to visit all year round.

Shire President Mitchell said the $26.3 million funding for Stage 2 is in addition to the $12 million granted to Stage 1 (which included $11 million in Federal Government grants and a $1 million Lotterywest contribution) and a $5 million Lotterywest grant to fund Stage 3.

“This is a very pleasing announcement, which will go a very long way to help realise the wonderful vision for the area sooner,” he said.

“The fact the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment is the only shovel-ready project eligible for substantial Stream 2 rPPP funding is a testament to the Shire’s extensive community consultation and commitment of Shire staff.”
