The Shire of Broome is seeking community feedback on its draft Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2026–2030.
The draft Strategy sets out the Shire’s proposed direction for waste management, resource recovery, infrastructure planning and service delivery over the next five years. It has been developed following a review of the existing Waste Management Strategy and community and stakeholder consultation undertaken during 2026.
The Strategy responds to a changing waste management environment, including increasing waste volumes, regional operating challenges, changing regulatory expectations and planning for the proposed Regional Resource Recovery Park.
It includes 27 actions across eight focus areas:
- waste infrastructure and operations
- waste services
- data, information and economics
- policy and procurement
- litter and illegal dumping
- behaviour change
- regional efficiencies
- Aboriginal communities.
Proposed actions include improving recycling performance, investigating green and organic waste options, increasing resource recovery opportunities, strengthening litter and illegal dumping management, supporting community education, improving waste data and financial planning, and progressing future waste infrastructure.
The draft Strategy also supports planning for the transition from the existing Broome Waste Management Facility to the proposed Regional Resource Recovery Park and includes actions relating to future landfill capacity, contingency arrangements and site closure and rehabilitation.
Council endorsed the draft Strategy for public comment at its Ordinary Meeting on 27 August 2026. The community, industry stakeholders and government agencies are now invited to review the document and provide feedback before the final Strategy is considered by Council.
