Broome Boating Facility project remains active and progressing

The Shire of Broome has been working closely with the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure on the Broome Boating Facility project since its inception and continues to engage with the Department following the decision to withdraw the existing referral to the Environmental Protection Authority.
The Shire sought clarification from DTMI on the process and has been advised that the project remains active and is continuing to progress. The updated concept is currently being refined in consultation with Traditional Owners and key stakeholders.
Shire President Chris Mitchell said it was important to reassure the community that the project has not been scrapped.
“The withdrawal of the current EPA referral does not mean the Broome Boating Facility has been abandoned,” Cr Mitchell said.
“We recognise how important improved boating infrastructure is to our community, and we remain committed to seeing this project move forward.”
DTMI has advised that the revised concept is being progressed to address environmental and heritage considerations identified since the original referral. An updated referral will most likely trigger a new public comment period at Stage 1, ensuring the community will again have the opportunity to provide feedback as part of the formal process.
The Shire will continue to liaise with DTMI and keep the community informed as further information becomes available.
Background:
The initial concept, referred to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) by DTMI in 2021, was recently withdrawn by DTMI’s project team due to the elapsed time and changes to the facility’s design.
