Broome Public Library group craft comfort for those in need

The Shire of Broome is proud to support a heart-warming community initiative that’s bringing comfort to locals across the region — with the Broome Public Library’s Craft and Conversation group knitting and crocheting dozens of trauma teddies, blankets and beanies for people in need.
In recent weeks, the group has completed 30 to 40 handmade blankets, many specially designed for wheelchair users, along with a collection of trauma teddies set to be distributed by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Red Cross.
Other handmade pieces have been donated to Germanus Kent and Kimberley Aged and Community Services, helping to brighten rooms and lift spirits across the community.
Meeting every Thursday morning at the Library, the volunteer group combines craft with connection - welcoming anyone who wants to knit, crochet, craft, or simply enjoy a chat over a morning tea.
Shire President Chris Mitchell praised the volunteers for their generosity and community spirit.
“This is community spirit at its best — locals coming together to support one another in such a meaningful and thoughtful way,” Cr Mitchell said.
“The Shire is proud to see the Broome Public Library serve as a hub for connection, creativity and kindness.
“Initiatives like this remind us what makes Broome such a special place to live.”
The group is now calling for yarn donations - particularly dark-coloured - which is best suited to the Kimberley’s pindan conditions.
Craft and Conversation meets every Thursday from 10am to 12pm at the Broome Public Library.
All are welcome to join the group or drop off yarn donations during opening hours.
