Hundreds of locals and visitors turned out to celebrate the official opening of Stage 1 of the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment and Broome Surf Life Saving Club on June 6, as the Cable Beach Comes Alive Opening Party transformed the iconic foreshore into a vibrant celebration of music, food and community.
The celebration marked a major milestone in the foreshore redevelopment, with the Shire of Broome hosting the free community event to showcase the redeveloped precinct and upgraded Surf Life Saving Club facilities.
Upgrades include improved beach access, restored sand dunes that protect the coastal environment, a welcoming new entrance to Yawuru Minyirr Buru Conservation Park, and a revitalised youth space.
Access to the Surf Life Saving Club is now safer and more pedestrian-friendly, and the promenade links the beachfront with the Cable Beach House restaurant.
The event was officially opened with speeches from the Hon. Roger Cook, Premier of Western Australia, Hon. Stephen Dawson, Minister for Regional Development, Member for Kimberley Divina D’Anna and Federal Government representative Scott Kneebone, joined by representatives from Lotterywest, and Surf Life Saving WA.
Deputy Shire President Desiree Male said the event exceeded expectations and reflected the community’s deep connection to the Cable Beach precinct.
“Cable Beach is the beating heart of Broome, and Friday’s event showed just how much this space means to our community,” Cr Male said.
“The atmosphere was incredible – from the live performances to the smiling families enjoying the new facilities. This redevelopment is about creating a space that brings people together and celebrates everything that makes Broome special.”
The night featured performances by local talents Theatre Kimberley, Broome Performing Arts Co-op, Ziggy and Lucas, Third Wheel, and Jacob Gregory, with support from Unbound Sound.
Food trucks served up a delicious range of cuisines, including Moonlite Crepes, Matt’s Filipino Cuisine, Brisket Boys, DMK, and Broome Soft Serve.
The event also provided locals the opportunity to explore the new public facilities, including an accessible ramp to the beach, landscaped pathways, fitness equipment, shaded areas, and the newly redeveloped Surf Club building.
Cr Male said the success of the evening was a promising sign for future stages of the redevelopment.
“This is just the beginning. Stage 1 has delivered a beautiful, functional and accessible space, and we’re excited to continue this journey alongside the community as Stage 2 progresses,” Cr Male said.
The Shire of Broome thanks all attendees, performers, vendors, and volunteers who helped make Cable Beach truly come alive.
