With the wet season fast approaching, the Shire of Broome is reminding residents to take time now to prepare their homes and families for potential cyclones and severe weather.

Shire President Chris Mitchell said while Broome has been fortunate to experience several quiet seasons, this can lead to complacency.

“It’s been a few years since Broome experienced a major cyclone, and that can make people drop their guard,”

“Now is the time to get ready — clear your yard, check your emergency supplies, and make sure your family knows what to do if a cyclone warning is issued.”

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather warnings and alerts issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). Updates are available through the DFES website, Emergency WA app, and the local radio.

The Shire has noted that Broome is amongst the lowest number of downloads for the Emergency WA app in WA, which is a vital tool for staying informed during severe weather events.

“The Emergency WA app is an incredibly useful tool that delivers up-to-date alerts straight to your phone,” Shire President Chris Mitchell said.

“It tells you exactly what’s happening, what warnings are active, and what actions you need to take. I encourage every resident to download the app today — it could make a real difference if a cyclone or severe storm hits.”

It is important to be aware of how the DFES warning systems operate. The warning levels are:

  • Advice: An incident is active. Be aware and keep up to date.
  • Watch and Act: There is a possible threat. Take action now to stay safe.
  • Emergency Warning: There is a threat to lives and homes. You may be in danger and need to take immediate action.

The Shire recommends residents take the following steps now to be cyclone-ready:

  • Clear your yard of loose items that could become debris in strong winds.
  • Trim trees and remove overhanging branches that may cause damage.
  • Clear drains and gutters to reduce the risk of flooding.
  • Prepare an emergency kit including non-perishable food, torches, spare batteries, a portable radio, first aid supplies, and drinking water.

Shire President Chris Mitchell said keeping Broome safe this cyclone season is a shared effort across the community.

“A little preparation now can save a lot of stress later. We all have a part to play in keeping Broome safe this cyclone season.”

Informational resources to help residents prepare are available at the Shire Administration Building, the Broome Public Library, and on the Shire of Broome website at www.broome.wa.gov.au/cyclones.
