The redevelopment of Guwarri Town Beach has been lauded on the national stage after the Shire of Broome and Josh Byrne & Associates won a prestigious planning award for the precinct’s rejuvenation last week.

The Guwarri Town Beach Foreshore Redevelopment project has seen one of Broome’s most-loved precincts transformed over recent years, thanks to $30 million of funding from the Shire and State Government.

After claiming two accolades at the Planning Institute Australia (PIA) WA 2021 Awards back in December, the Shire’s submission was entered into the national equivalent.

On May 18, the Shire claimed top spot in the ‘Great Place’ category at the PIA national awards in Hobart.

This latest achievement follows on from the project also winning the Playspace Award at the national Parks & Leisure Awards of Excellence in November 2020.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said winning national awards was apt recognition for the success of the project and a massive achievement for our town.

“The redevelopment of Town Beach has been such a transformational project and has created a vibrant new space that our community loves,” he said.

“Through the Old Broome Development Strategy and master planning process, consultation with Yawuru and the community, and detailed design undertaken by Josh Byrne and Associates, we created an ambitious vision.

“To see that vision turned into reality has been fantastic and is a credit to everyone involved in the project.

“With the same project team that undertook the Town Beach Redevelopment currently working on the detailed design process for the Cable Beach Foreshore project, our community can rest assured that another amazing space in Broome is also on the way.”

The Town Beach Foreshore Redevelopment included the construction of a rock revetment seawall, coastal footpath, groyne and grassed terrace seating.

Parking has also been improved significantly, while the development of a new playground, basketball court and scooter track, as well as the enhanced water park and extensive art and interpretation, has helped transform the area.

The remaining component of the project was the completion of a $6 million, 112-metre jetty that is now heavily used by the Broome community.
