The Broome Waste Management Facility is offering a free waste disposal service over the last weekend of October and first weekend of November, allowing residents to remove domestic waste from their homes and backyards at no cost.

This service is in addition to the six free waste passes ratepayers receive annually. The kerbside cyclone collection no longer occurs, with this free service offered instead.

Seniors/pensioners who do not have the ability to take rubbish to the Waste Management Facility can request a skip bin for a fee of $11. This will be dropped off and picked up the following week, while a list of eligible and non-eligible domestic waste items can be found by clicking here.

This service will be offered on Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31; and Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7.

The Waste Management Facility is based on Buckley’s Road and its opening hours are:

  • Saturdays - 7.30am - 3.30pm.
  • Sundays - 8am - 2pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a 60% chance of an above-average number of tropical cyclones in the North West Region this year and with the wet season fast approaching, now is the time to get prepared.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said residents’ safety was the utmost priority and urged the entire Broome community to make use of the free waste disposal weekends.

“We have seen the devastation in the Mid-West earlier this year with Cyclone Seroja and this is why we need to prepare ourselves for the wet season by removing household waste from our backyards,” he said.

“We need to make sure we have a plan in place for this cyclone season by being prepared. This should involve stocking up on dry or canned food and water, and fuelling up vehicles, as well as ensuring you have your emergency kits, portable radios and torches with extra batteries.

“Please let’s all be prepared this cyclone season and keep ourselves safe.”
