Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment designs revealed

The Shire of Broome has revealed the latest design renderings of the Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment project ahead of construction commencing in 2023.
The project’s realisation will follow a six-year community consultation and design process looking into how best to protect the Cable Beach Foreshore and improve the amenity of the world-famous tourist attraction.
Highlights include:
- A new urban public space linking the beach entrances near Zanders restaurant and the Broome Life Saving Club
- A children's water park and dry playground
- A youth space
- Shade structures
- Additional lawn areas and facilities for small and larger-scale concerts and events
- Reprofiled sand dunes that will better protect them from storms and erosion
- Realigned ampitheatre which will offer better ocean views and ability to host events.
Work on the project will be staggered to ensure the ongoing usability of the area, starting with Stage One, which will transform the area behind the Surf Club and will involve undergrounding the drainage network adjacent to the carpark to create additional space.
This has created an opportunity to install the youth space into the design – a constant request during the stakeholder engagement process.
As well as being a meeting place, the youth space will allow for popular activities such as half-court basketball and a skate path with jumps, grinds and quarter pipes.
Rather than being standalone facilities, the basketball and skate elements will blend into the overall design, which will also feature a permanent shade structure with seating and barbecues, a grassed picnic area, and public-use exercise equipment.
Power provisions will be installed for small scale events such as DJs and market traders.
The pedestrian stairs and vehicle access ramp near the Surf Club will be replaced, and a new coastal footpath and balustrade installed. As part of these works the coastal dunes will be reprofiled and re-planted to better protect them from storms.
The coastal promenade will host public art and interpretation installations that reflect the cultural and historical significance of Cable Beach and the Broome area.
Public-use fitness equipment will be installed on the adjacent to the promenade, north of the Surf Club.
The entrance to Minyrr Park will also be beautified, with a trail-head park with native landscaping, seating and additional signage and information.
The Surf Club carpark will remain, with the area to be resealed and more pedestrian friendly, with wider footpaths and lighting.
Stage One of the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
Stage Two of the redevelopment will follow Stage 1 and involve the balance of work across the site, particularly near Zanders.
This will include extending the coastal protection works across the rest of the site and improving the beach access next to Zanders to become a community plaza and the precinct’s key arrival point.
Facilities here will include a second large shade structure overlooking the water park and dry playground, a central grassed area, and a plaza corridor linking the main beach access near Zanders to the carpark, bus drop off and Cable Beach Club.
The amphitheatre area to the north will be reconfigured to allow for small pop-up performances, with a hard stand and built-in power outlets to allowing performers to plug in and play.
The amphitheatre itself will be reorientated and the grass area reprofiled to allow for better views of Cable Beach’s famous sunsets and to allow for large-scale performances with up to 4000 spectators on the sand.
The vehicle access ramp to the beach will also be realigned, and the basin drainage infilled, to recover parking space lost near Zanders.
The Shire has engaged Fremantle-based Josh Byrne and Associates, which worked on the Chinatown and Town Beach redevelopments, to lead the project.
