Two of Broome’s most eagerly-awaited road-improvement projects will be completed by the end of September, with work set to commence on improving traffic flow in and out of the Senior High School car park on Frederick Street.

The Broome Senior High School Car Park Project, which will create a more streamlined drop-off zone to prevent traffic congestion along Frederick Street at school times, is scheduled to commence on August 7.

The timing comes as construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Port Drive and Guy Street (above) enters its latter stages. Both projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of September.

However, despite a delayed start and some unseasonal rain, the roundabout construction work, designed to eliminate one of Broome’s worst accident black spots is progressing well with the principal contractor, Roadline Civil, on track to complete the project ahead of schedule pending the availability of asphalt laying equipment.

The Broome Senior High School Car Park Project was not expected to commence until later in the year. But with contractor McCorry Brown in a position to start work sooner, it was decided to run the projects concurrently.

During this time, school drop-offs and pick-ups will occur in the car park of the adjacent football oval through the entrance on Lyons Street.

Broome Shire President Desiree Male said despite the proximity of the projects, the work on Frederick Street will not compound any traffic issues caused by the closure of the intersection of Port Drive and Guy Street.

“The Frederick Street work is centred on transforming the existing car park into a fit-for-purpose drop-off point, meaning there will be minimal disruption to the road

itself,” Cr Male said.

“In fact, with parents unable to use that car park during that time, traffic might actually be a little better than usual during school drop-off and pick-up times.”

Cr Male thanked everyone for their patience during the road works.

"Thanks to Shire and contract workers, we'll soon be rewarded with a quicker and safer journey for people travelling through Port Drive and Frederick Street."
