The Shire of Broome was a big winner at the Planning Institute Australia WA 2021 Awards last week, claiming top spot in two categories for the Town Beach / Guwarri Foreshore Redevelopment.

Town Beach has been transformed over recent years thanks to $30 million worth of investment from the Shire and State Government, with the rejuvenated precinct now a firm favourite with the local community.

The Shire won the ‘Great Place’ award, taking out the prestigious accolade ahead of high-profile initiatives such as the $400 million development of the WA Boola Bardip Museum.

In assessing the Shire’s application, the judges stated the Town Beach / Guwarri project has ‘successfully created an inclusive place that brings together people of all ages, cultures and abilities’.

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti also recognised the Town Beach / Guwarri project, with the Shire claiming a second accolade of the night by winning the illustrious Minister’s Award.

Josh Byrne & Associates, who are currently also undertaking detailed design work for the Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment, were commissioned by the Shire to work on the Town Beach project.

The latest accolades follow on from the Town Beach Foreshore Redevelopment project being recognised with victory in the Playspace Award category at the National Parks & Leisure Awards of Excellence in November 2020.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the latest awards were a testament to the quality of the Town Beach Foreshore Redevelopment.

“Town Beach is loved by the Broome community and the Shire is massively proud of the work undertaken to make this precinct an even more enjoyable space for local families, residents and visitors,” he said.

“To be recognised as a winner among some of the most significant projects across Western Australia is a source of pride for the Shire and a nice pat on the back to everyone that worked so hard on the Town Beach redevelopment.”
